May 2010
Art 8 from Washington
Circle Ten Art Gallery is very pleased to play host during May to the artists who comprise the Washington (NC) – based group, ART 8. Eight different mediums encompassing oil and acrylic painting, pen and ink drawing, silk painting, jewelry, fabric art, stained glass, photography, and stylized masks will be represented.
As the name suggests, there are eight members in this very active group, which includes Pat Carlson, Kathy Davis, JJ Jarvah, Jan Lamoreaux, Bev Lasher, MJ Peters, Doris Schneider, and Nancy Scoble. Their arts are diverse, their points of view are diverse, and each hails from a different state, including Canada.
Originally, these artists worked together as a committee for the Beaufort County Arts Council in 2009. Rather than break the bond that formed while completing its goals, the former committee of eight decided to continue their commitment to the arts and each other by becoming ART 8.
Although each member of ART 8 is active in the Washington galleries, they are excited to exhibit together as a group for the first time at Circle Ten. Member Doris Schneider is also well-known as part of Circle Ten’s regular artists.
Please join us at the opening Reception on Sunday, May 2nd 2:00 – 4:00pm to meet the artists and enjoy their creative endeavors. Light refreshments will be served.
June 2010
Jeff Pittman
Circle 10 Art Gallery will highlight the works of Jeff Pittman as its Guest Artist for June. Although Jeff is now a well-known artist in Asheville, he feels right at home in Oriental, where countless summers and weekends were spent at his parents’ summer cottage. “I have so many wonderful memories of growing up by the river playing with my brothers in the big tree house, catching crabs at the old town dock, and enjoying all of the things that make Oriental such a great place for a kid.”
Jeff readily credits his father and mentor, local artist Bob Pittman, who recently became a permanent resident of Oriental, with inspiring him to develop his artistic talent. As a child he grew up watching his dad paint, and notes that he was “dragged from one art museum to another” during his early years. Now, he looks back on these experiences with deep appreciation.
Excited about exhibiting in his former summer haven, Jeff has focused on painting coastal North Carolina, and the well-known and much loved landmarks of Oriental.
Jeff is equally at home on the streets of Savannah or Charleston, Asheville or Charlotte, creating the popular cityscapes that embody the feel of each particular place. He especially loves to paint wide mountain vistas with spacious skies, as well as capture the energy of the seas and the quiet landscapes of rural North Carolina. The use of bold brush strokes give Pittman’s paintings a feeling of texture and movement, and the use of vibrant colors create a natural glow, all key elements in bringing his subject matter to life!
Circle 10 will host a reception for Jeff from 2 to 4 p.m. on June 13th, the second Sunday in June. Please note that this is a departure from the regular reception schedule.
Jeff’s work will have the additional distinction of being the last Guest Artist that the Gallery will sponsor. Circle 10 Art Gallery is closing its doors on June 30th after 26 years of providing excellence in artistic and creative expression in Pamlico County. This is a extra incentive to welcome Jeff ‘back home,’ and to say ‘so long’ to the Circle 10 as a definitive ART destination in Oriental, North Carolina. The gallery is located at 1103 Broad St. in Oriental.
